Comparative Study of Workers in Mining and Textile Industries in Turkey in the Context of Class Consciousness

This study aims to contribute to the contemporary debates about the formation of class-based consciousness in Turkey with special reference to coal miners in Zonguldak and textile workers in Bursa. We will try to analyze class-based consciousness and forms of solidarity mainly in relation to Mann’s formulations of ‘class identity’, ‘class opposition’, ‘class totality’ and ‘conception of an alternative society’ (Mann, 1973) and Lockwood’s three different working class typologies of the ‘traditional proletarian’, ‘traditional deferential’ and ‘privatized’ respectively (Lockwood, 1975). In addition to this, We will spend some time on how class organizations which mediate between consciousness and collective action are perceived by the laborers.
